The book: Attractive and very good first edition of the Robin Hood and his Merry Men illustrated by Rowland Wheelwright.
The author: Sara Hawks Sterling (1874-1936) was an American schoolteacher and novelist. Sterling specialized in fiction about historical and legendary figures, such as King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Anne Hathaway. Her novel Shakespeare's Sweetheart, published in 1905, is an early attempt to view William Shakespeare's life and romantic exploits from a female perspective. Shakespeare's Sweetheart and A Lady of King Arthur's Court were both illustrated by Clara Elsene Peck.
The illustrator: Roland Wheelwright (1870-1955) was an Australian painter, who moved to England at an early age and settled in Bushey, Hertfordshire. The artist was born in Ipswich in Australia in 1870, the grandson of John Hawden Wheelwright, a court painter in Brussels. His parents were sheep farmers, who returned to England following the drought in Australia in the 1880s. On his return to England, he studied art at St. John's Wood Art School and then the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey under Sir Hubert von Herkomer, RA - he studied alongside Lucy Kemp Welch. Rowland Wheelwright then completed his studies at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
