The marquise cut has experienced waves of popularity through her lifespan: designed c. 1745, in Paris for King Louis XV, who requested a diamond in the shape of his mistress' smile, the stone has inspired designers (and frustrated stone setters) ever since, reaching peak popularity from the 1950s-1980s.
