The Victron BlueSolar PWM-Light 12/24V-30A is a compact, entry-level solar charge controller designed for straightforward off-grid and standalone solar charging applications. It automatically detects 12V or 24V battery systems and regulates charge using pulse width modulation to protect batteries from overcharge. Suited to small solar installations where simplicity and reliability matter more than advanced monitoring.
PWM charge controllers work by connecting the solar panel directly to the battery and switching the connection on and off at high frequency to maintain the battery at the correct voltage. This approach is well-suited to smaller systems where the panel voltage is closely matched to the battery voltage. The BlueSolar PWM-Light range is Victron's stripped-back option: it delivers the core charge control function without the additional communications, load output or programmability found on higher-tier controllers.
At 30A, this controller sits at the upper end of the PWM-Light range and can handle a meaningful panel array for a 12V or 24V system. It is a practical choice for caravans, campervans, small cabins, agricultural equipment, marine auxiliary systems and similar applications where a straightforward, low-cost charge controller is all that is needed. Because PWM controllers do not include an MPPT stage, they are most efficient when the panel's nominal voltage matches the battery bank voltage. For mismatched or higher-voltage panel strings, an MPPT controller would be more appropriate.
The unit auto-detects battery voltage on first connection, so there is no need to set a voltage selector switch. This reduces the risk of incorrect configuration in the field.
This controller is intended for 12V and 24V nominal battery systems only. Connect the battery terminals before connecting the solar panel, and ensure all wiring is correctly fused in line with the current rating. The controller does not include a load output, so any DC loads must be wired directly to the battery with appropriate overcurrent protection. While this unit is suitable for competent self-installation in low-voltage DC systems, any installation forming part of a larger solar PV system connected to a dwelling should be carried out by a qualified electrician or MCS-accredited installer in accordance with BS 7671 and applicable building regulations.
