A fine and highly decorative pair of antique armchairs, retaining their original mid-20th century needlepoint upholstery by the renowned Belgian workshop Gaspard De Wit of Mechelen. The chairs are raised on elegant turned legs united by stretchers, with shaped arms and a solid hardwood frame in the Louis XIII revival manner, dating from the mid 20th century. Both backrests and seats are upholstered in finely worked needlepoint depicting charming pastoral scenes with deer, trees, and stylised foliage, framed by bold scrolling borders in red, blue, and cream tones. The upholstery is finished with traditional brass stud detailing. Both chairs are in good condition with some scratches to one chair arm.
The presence of the original maker’s label beneath the seat links the work to Gaspard De Wit, a distinguished Belgian atelier known for producing and restoring high-quality tapestries and furnishing textiles, often supplying prestigious interiors.
A rare opportunity to acquire a characterful and authentic pair of tapestry-upholstered armchairs with identifiable workshop provenance.
