Chris Blackwell having had success with Island and Black Swan labels, found the need for a record disruption company. It was no longer viable for him to delivery records himself by van around London. Lee Gopthal with the help of four friends set up B&C (Beat & Commercial), as the business grew they moved to a warehouse in Neasdon, London. They launched a further six record labels one of which was Coxsone Records in 1967. The sub-label takes takes its name from Studio One founder and producer Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd. He was nicknamed Coxsone at school due to his talent as a cricketer (his friends compared him to Alec Coxon, a member of the 1940s Yorkshire County Cricket Club team). In the latter part of Coxone's life it was taken over by Trojan. The label was home to some of the most highly-regarded reggae acts of the time, including Jackie Mittoo. Nearly all Coxsone singles are very scarce and very sought-after.
