The Victron Smart BMS CL 12-100 is a battery management system designed for 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery installations in mobile and off-grid applications. It monitors and protects the battery from overcharge, over-discharge and short circuit, while managing charge sources and loads up to 100A. It is aimed at professional installers working on campervans, boats, vehicles and similar 12V systems.
The Smart BMS CL 12-100 sits between the lithium battery and the rest of the 12V system, acting as the central protection and control point. It reads cell-level data directly from compatible Victron lithium batteries through the battery's BMS cell connector port. When any cell reaches its upper or lower voltage limit, the BMS issues a charge disconnect or load disconnect signal accordingly. This protects the cells from conditions that cause permanent capacity loss or safety hazards.
The "CL" designation refers to the combined charge and load management capability. The charge disconnect output is typically wired to control an alternator-to-battery charger or a DC-DC charger, rather than connecting the alternator directly to the lithium battery. This is an important distinction: connecting a vehicle alternator directly to a lithium battery without current limiting can damage the alternator. The Smart BMS CL 12-100 is designed to work alongside a suitable DC-DC charger in that circuit.
Bluetooth is built in, so the system can be monitored and configured using the free VictronConnect app on iOS or Android. No separate dongle or interface is required. For larger system integration, the BMS communicates with Victron MultiPlus inverter/chargers and SmartSolar MPPT controllers to coordinate charge and load management across the full installation.
The Smart BMS CL 12-100 is compatible only with Victron lithium batteries that feature an internal BMS cell connector port. It is not suitable for third-party lithium batteries or lead-acid chemistries. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced system integrator familiar with lithium battery systems. When integrating with a vehicle alternator, a suitable DC-DC battery-to-battery charger must be used in the charge circuit; do not connect the alternator output directly to the lithium battery. Ensure all wiring is correctly rated for the 100A continuous load current and that appropriate fusing is installed on all positive conductors.
