The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/85-Tr VE.Can is a high-current solar charge controller designed for professional off-grid, marine and large residential installations. It accepts a maximum PV open-circuit voltage of 150V and delivers up to 85A of charge current, with built-in Bluetooth and VE.Can network connectivity for integration into larger Victron systems.
The 150/85-Tr sits in the mid-to-upper range of the SmartSolar MPPT series. The 150V maximum PV voltage allows the use of longer PV strings with higher-voltage panels, reducing cable losses and giving installers more flexibility in array design. At 85A output, it can handle substantial PV arrays on 12V, 24V or 48V battery banks, with the highest charge power available on a 48V system.
The VE.Can interface is the key differentiator over standard SmartSolar models. It allows the controller to communicate directly with Victron GX devices over a CAN bus network, enabling full remote monitoring, firmware updates over the network, and coordinated control in multi-device installations. This makes it well suited to systems where a Cerbo GX or similar device is already present, or where the installer needs centralised oversight of multiple charge sources.
The Tr (screw terminal) variant is intended for fixed installations where cable management and terminal security are priorities. The controller's MPPT algorithm continuously tracks the optimal power point of the PV array, which is particularly relevant in partial shading conditions or when panel temperature causes the MPP to shift during the day.

Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or MCS-accredited installer familiar with DC solar systems. The PV array must be designed so that the open-circuit voltage does not exceed 150V under any temperature condition, including cold-weather Voc. Ensure correct fusing on both the PV and battery connections in accordance with wiring regulations. For VE.Can network use, the CAN bus must be correctly terminated at both ends of the network. Lithium battery profiles must be configured to match the specific battery management system in use. This unit is not suitable for grid-tied export without additional approved equipment.
