The KGE Bassoon Reed is a Medium-strength bassoon reed made by KGE in Shanghai, the bassoon counterpart to their oboe range. Workshop-made for consistency, with a noticeably warm sound through the lower and middle range of the instrument.
The KGE bassoon reed is designed as an all-rounder, but it's particularly responsive across the bassoon's lower and middle registers, where it produces a broad, warm sound. The wider 16mm flared tip helps with the projection in those registers. It plays freely from soft entries upward, and holds together cleanly across the dynamic range.
Most of the bassoon reeds we stock are hand-made by professional bassoonists, with all the small refinements that come from finishing each reed individually. KGE take a different route: a workshop process designed for repeatability rather than individual touch. You give up some of the nuance a hand-finishing maker brings, but you gain reed-to-reed consistency that's harder to achieve in a smaller workshop.
For a hand-finished UK alternative at a similar price point, our Alaw Bassoon Reed is hand-made by a professional bassoonist for a warm, centred British sound. For a starter-level KGE option, see the KGE Student Bassoon Reed. Or browse the full bassoon reed range.
