The book: A Journey to the North Pole is the first English translation of Jules Verne's celebrated Arctic adventure Les Aventures du capitaine Hatteras, one of the earliest and most ambitious works in his famous Voyages Extraordinaires series. Published in London by George Routledge and Sons in 1875, this edition introduced English-speaking readers to one of Verne's most compelling tales of exploration and obsession.

The novel follows the enigmatic Captain Hatteras, whose singular ambition is to reach the North Pole at any cost. As his expedition ventures deeper into the frozen Arctic, the narrative combines scientific curiosity, geographical speculation, and relentless adventure. Drawing upon contemporary accounts of polar exploration, including the Franklin searches and numerous nineteenth-century expeditions, Verne creates a story that is both thrilling fiction and a reflection of the Victorian fascination with the world's last unknown frontiers.

The author: Jules Verne (1828–1905) is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern science fiction and among the most influential adventure writers of the nineteenth century. His Voyages Extraordinaires transformed popular literature by combining scientific knowledge with imaginative storytelling, inspiring generations of readers, explorers, engineers, and writers.

The illustrator: Édouard Riou (1833–1900) was one of the most important illustrators associated with Jules Verne's early works and a leading figure in nineteenth-century French book illustration. Trained as an artist and engraver, Riou became renowned for his ability to combine documentary precision with dramatic visual storytelling.
