Manchester Volunteer Regiment gilded brass and coloured enamel badge that originally had a button hole fixing but was period skillfully altered to broach back. Minor service wear.

The Manchester Volunteer Regiment was not a conventional line regiment. It was created in 1915, at the height of Britain’s anxiety during the First World War, when the country genuinely feared invasion, sabotage, and internal unrest while its main fighting forces were locked in France and Flanders.

This was a home defence and security force, raised from men who were:

  • Too old, too young, or in reserved occupations
  • Already essential to Britain’s industrial war effort
  • Or unable to serve overseas but determined to contribute

Manchester, as one of the most important industrial and logistical cities in Britain, was a critical location to defend.

A regiment born of crisis – and patriotism

By 1915, Britain was:

  • Losing men at an unprecedented rate on the Western Front
  • Expanding munitions factories at speed
  • Experiencing air raids, espionage fears, and labour unrest

The Manchester Volunteer Regiment was formed to:

  • Guard factories, railways, docks, bridges, and power infrastructure
  • Provide armed patrols and rapid response within the city
  • Free up trained soldiers for frontline service abroad

This wasn’t ceremonial soldiering. These men were armed, uniformed, and drilled, often after long shifts in factories or offices.
