Red Pygmy Waspfish: The Venomous Mini-Predator

The Red Pygmy Waspfish (Paracentropogon zonatus), also known as the Pygmy Red Rooster Waspfish or Bandtail Waspfish, is a small, highly cryptic, and venomous member of the scorpionfish family (Scorpaenidae). It is highly sought after for its striking mottled red and white coloration and its small adult size, which makes it suitable for smaller marine aquariums.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species is a slow-moving, bottom-dwelling ambush predator, typically found perching on or around rockwork, rubble, and coral crevices in shallow reef areas. It uses its excellent camouflage to remain motionless, waiting for small prey to pass within striking distance.

Unlike its large Stonefish relatives, the Red Pygmy Waspfish remains quite small, reaching a maximum size of 2 to 3 inches (5–7.5 cm). This modest size allows it to be housed in a minimum aquarium of 20 to 30 gallons, provided the tank is stable and offers ample rockwork and low-flow areas for perching.

Despite its small stature, this fish possesses venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines, requiring significant caution during all tank maintenance. It is considered an Advanced level fish due to its specific feeding needs, venomous nature, and requirement for a calm, stable tank environment.

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: The Red Pygmy Waspfish is a dedicated Carnivore that primarily preys on small crustaceans in the wild.
  • Feeding: This is the most challenging aspect of its care. It must be target-fed and often requires live foods (such as live adult brine shrimp, ghost shrimp, or small feeder shrimp) upon introduction. It can be slowly weaned onto frozen, meaty foods (mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood) presented with a feeding stick. Due to its slow metabolism, it only needs to be fed 3-4 times per week.
  • Reef Compatibility: It is Reef Safe With Caution. It will generally ignore corals, but it is a small predator that will actively hunt and consume tiny fish and all ornamental shrimp and crustaceans that fit into its mouth. It is best kept in a fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) system.
  • Temperament: It is Semi-Aggressive / Predatory due to its hunting nature, but is otherwise a peaceful and solitary fish. It should only be housed with large, peaceful, slow-moving, or fast-moving fish that will not outcompete it for food. It should be kept singly unless a confirmed mated pair is available.
  • Venomous Spines: The venom is less potent than that of a Stonefish, but the sting is still very painful. If stung, immediately immerse the affected area in the hottest water you can tolerate (not scalding, approx. 113°F or 45°C) for 30–90 minutes, as heat breaks down the protein-based venom. Seek medical attention immediately.
