Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far.

Rich with symbolism, the decorative engraving also includes an enamelled ouroboros (representing undying love and the circle of life), a buckle (for loyalty and fidelity), and a forget me not on the back side. Inside, two charming portraits of a man and woman whose stories we can only guess at. On a plaque passing through the ouroboros are the initials A.B.

Good antique condition with reasonable wear for the piece's age. Locket closure and individual frames are secure, though one glass plate is broken. Slight dent on face.
