Eleocharis pusilla: Mini Dwarf Hairgrass

Eleocharis pusilla, commonly known as Mini Dwarf Hairgrass, is one of the shortest and finest varieties of hairgrass tissue cultures available to the aquarium hobby. It is often incorrectly or interchangeably sold under the name Eleocharis parvula or Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini', but E. pusilla is the species widely cultivated and known for its exceptionally compact growth, reaching a height of only 1 to 2 inches (3-5 cm).

This plant is the go-to choice for aquascapers aiming to create a realistic, manicured "lawn" or "meadow" effect, particularly in Nano Aquariums or Iwagumi-style layouts where scale is critical. It spreads horizontally via runners (rhizomes), forming a dense, vibrant green carpet over the substrate.

While generally considered to be of Moderate difficulty to carpet quickly, E. pusilla is one of the most reliable hairgrass species for foreground coverage. Its long-term, low-growing form requires less frequent trimming compared to other hairgrass varieties, making it a favorite for aquarists dedicated to high-tech planted tanks.

Care Requirements & Planting:

• Difficulty: This is a Moderate difficulty plant. While it is adaptable, achieving a dense, fast-spreading carpet requires a high-tech setup.
• Lighting: Requires Medium to High light. High light (40-50+ PAR) is crucial to keep the plant short, compact, and encourage rapid horizontal runner production for dense carpeting. In low light, it will etiolate (stretch and grow too tall).
• CO₂ Supplementation: Highly Recommended. While it can technically survive without it (Low-Tech), CO₂ injection (10-30 mg/L) is essential for achieving a quick, dense carpet and maintaining the plant's short height. Without CO₂, carpeting is very slow.
• Substrate & Fertilization: As a strong root feeder that spreads by runners, a Nutrient-Rich Substrate (like aquatic soil) is ideal. In inert substrates (sand/gravel), Root Tabs are absolutely necessary to provide essential nutrients, especially Iron, to prevent yellowing or melting.
• Planting: Divide the plant into very small portions (4-6 blades per clump) and plant them 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart. Planting in small clumps encourages runners and speeds up the carpeting process. The Dry Start Method (growing emersed before flooding the tank) is highly effective for establishing a quick, strong carpet.
• Pruning: Due to its naturally small size, trimming is minimal. Once the carpet is established, use curved scissors to 'mow the lawn' (cut the blades down to an even height) to remove old growth, prevent debris buildup, and stimulate fresh, compact growth.
