As striking in their design and fabrication now as they were a hundred years ago, "Rose of Sharon" rings are characteristically made featuring an amethyst that has been carved as an intaglio (with the design sunk into the stone's flat surface), with a fine layer of gold leaf emphasizing the floral design and occasionally one or more small rose cut diamonds as further embellishment.
Though the concept dates back considerably earlier, the Victorians were particularly enamoured of floriography - the pairing of distinct meanings to each flower (and often varying by colour). Rose of Sharon, hardy and long-blooming, carried the association of perseverance and longing, and unsurprisingly these rings found themselves exceptionally popular in the American Civil War era as many lovers found themselves parted for long periods and distances.
Very good antique condition with wear in line with previous use. Setting has been carefully retipped.
