Spotted Coral Grouper: The Reef Behemoth

The Spotted Coral Grouper (Plectropomus maculatus), also commonly known as the Bar-cheeked Coral Trout or Coastal Coral Trout, is an immense and strikingly beautiful marine predator. This grouper species features a body coloration that can range from red, pale grey, or olive to a dark brown, all covered with numerous small, blue, sometimes elongate spots on its head, body, and fins. Its distinctive coloration and large, robust build make it a prized, albeit challenging, aquarium specimen.

Native to coastal reefs across the Western Pacific, this species is a true giant, reaching a maximum reported size of up to 49 inches (125 cm) in the wild, with aquarium specimens likely to be smaller but still immense. Due to its extreme adult size and high bioload, the Spotted Coral Grouper requires an appropriately sized, public-aquarium-scale system, often 500 gallons or more, to sustain a healthy life.

As a solitary, top-level ambush predator, it is a magnificent centerpiece, but its size and predatory nature mean tankmates must be chosen with extreme care. The name "grouper" is a warning: it will consume any fish or invertebrate that fits into its voluminous mouth.

Diet & Compatibility:

  • Diet: The Spotted Coral Grouper is a dedicated Piscivore/Carnivore and a highly effective ambush predator. In the wild, it primarily hunts fish, squid, and large crustaceans. In captivity, it must be fed a diet of large, non-living, meaty marine foods, such as whole silversides, chunks of squid, shrimp, and strips of fish fillet.
  • Feeding: Due to their low metabolism, adults should be fed a large meal only every 2-3 days. They are very eager eaters and should be watched to prevent overfeeding. Avoid feeding freshwater feeder fish (like guppies or goldfish) as this can lead to severe health issues.
  • Reef Compatibility: Not Reef Safe. It will systematically hunt and consume virtually all ornamental invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, snails) and all but the largest fish.
  • Temperament: Predatory / Semi-Aggressive. It should only be housed with large, robust, and fast-moving tankmates (such as large Tangs, Triggers, Moray Eels, and aggressive marine Angels) that are significantly larger than the Grouper's mouth. Only one specimen should be kept per aquarium.
  • Tank Requirements: Requires a huge, established aquarium with massive filtration to handle its heavy waste production (bioload). The tank must include large rock structures, caves, and crevices to provide the necessary hiding and ambush spots for this solitary fish.
