Emperor Red Snapper: The Giant Banded Predator

The Emperor Red Snapper (Lutjanus sebae), also known as the Red Emperor or Sebae Snapper, is a large, predatory marine fish highly prized for its beauty as a juvenile. Juveniles exhibit a striking pattern of three bold, oblique dark-red to black bands over a white or pink body, including a band that passes directly through the eye.

Native to the vast Indo-West Pacific, this species is a fast-growing fish that reaches an immense size. In the wild, they can grow up to 46 inches (116 cm), though they commonly reach about 24 inches. As they mature, the distinct juvenile bands fade, and the fish assumes a more uniform reddish-pink or red coloration. Due to its size, predatory nature, and heavy bio-load, the Emperor Red Snapper is suitable only for the most experienced aquarists with massive, specialized aquariums, often of a size typically found in public displays.

A bare minimum tank size of 300 gallons is required for a small juvenile, with an upgrade to 1,000+ gallons being necessary for the long-term health and welfare of a sub-adult or adult specimen.

Diet & Compatibility:

• Diet: This fish is a dedicated Carnivore and a ferocious predator in the wild. Its diet consists of fish, crabs, shrimps, and cephalopods. In captivity, it should be fed a protein-rich diet of fresh or frozen meaty foods, such as chunks of silversides, squid, clam, and marine shrimp. Supplementing with a high-quality marine carnivore pellet is also recommended. Avoid fatty freshwater foods like beefheart.
• Feeding: Feed once daily to several times per week. The Emperor Snapper has a heavy bio-load, so powerful filtration and careful feeding are essential to maintaining excellent water quality.
• Reef Compatibility: It is Not Reef Safe. While it generally ignores corals, it is a formidable predator and will systematically consume any ornamental crustaceans (shrimp, crabs) and any fish small enough to fit into its surprisingly large mouth.
• Temperament: It is Aggressive / Predatory. As an adult, it is best kept as a solitary specimen in a large Fish-Only (FO) or Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock (FOWLR) system. It should only be housed with large, robust, and similarly semi-aggressive fish like groupers, triggers, and large marine angels. Juveniles may school, but adults become aggressive towards conspecifics.
• Aquarium Note: Due to its speed and power, the aquarium must have a secure and reinforced lid to prevent the fish from jumping out.
