One of Islay's finest whiskies in the direct fire distillation era.
Back from the Morrison Bowmore days. A full bottle of this is not low priced anymore and difficult to source now. Back then the sugars would caramelise more under the heat spots caused by the contact of fire on copper.
They were bought by Suntory in 1989
Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay however it didn’t have much notable history until Suntory bought 35% in Morrison-Bowmore in 1989. After this point we saw huge changes in how Bowmore was marketed to the world. The launch of Black Bowmore in 1993, arguably, signalled the induction of whisky as a collectable asset. Suntory bought Morrison-Bowmore outright in 1994. Following this was the launch of Bowmore 15 Darkest in 1999, and the eventual release of the oldest and most sought-after Bowmore stocks to the world. There was also the change in distillate style after Suntory became involved, with the pre1990 stock of Bowmore always being given the ‘lavender’ moniker.
Bowmore distilled in the 60s and 70s has legendary status amongst those who love their Islay / peated whiskies. Here is one more of those.
