Editions of the Bible printed in the 1700s are especially significant in the history of printing and textual standardization. In the English-speaking world, the King James Version (first published in 1611) dominated the century, with major 18th-century printings refining its text; most notably, the 1762 Cambridge edition edited by Thomas Paris and the 1769 Oxford edition edited by Benjamin Blayney standardized spelling, punctuation, italics, and marginal notes, creating the form still commonly used today. Across Europe and the American colonies, Bibles were printed in many languages, often as large family Bibles or smaller portable editions, reflecting both advances in printing technology and the growing importance of personal Bible reading during the Protestant era.
